Background
Large research infrastructures are crucial for frontier research and play important roles in the advancement of many fields of science and in the fields of medicine, environmental studies, cultural heritage research, innovative materials and many others. However, large infrastructures are not always available every country. Facility sharing and user-friendly facility access schemes are encouraged to ensure full utilization of the infrastructure as well as to further support regional and international collaboration and to promote a larger impact in terms of scientific advancement, economic development, and social returns. ASEAN Large Nuclear and Synchrotron Facilities Network (LNSN) is a network with an aim to create a regional platform that promote sharing of nuclear, synchrotron and related facilities locate in ASEAN in order to enhance regional collaboration and to promote human resources development in the field of nuclear and synchrotron science and technology. Linkages with other regional and global networks especially ASEAN-EU collaboration are of great interest. This session on Regional Nuclear, Radiation and Synchrotron Infrastructures for Research will introduce a few examples of large nuclear and radiation research facilities in Europe and ASEAN in view of promoting future collaboration and knowledge-sharing on strategic development of regional research infrastructures.
Purposes and objectives
- To explore and update on nuclear, radiation, and related research infrastructures in ASEAN, their capabilities uses, and plans for future development.
- To assess the needs for nuclear and radiation research infrastructure among ASEAN Member States (AMSs).
Target audiences
20–30 representatives from AMSs with infrastructures or with concrete plans for infrastructures related to nuclear, radiation, and particle acceleration for research who are familiar with the plan for infrastructure development in these areas.
Activities
- Pre-event survey on current and future nuclear and radiation infrastructures for research
- Presentations from AMSs regarding new developments and plans for nuclear and radiation research infrastructures
- Experience sharing from EU on landscape studies and facility sharing
Outputs
First draft on landscape and roadmap of nuclear and radiation research infrastructures in ASEAN.
(Full report will be presented to the Governing Council of LNSN for endorsement and to ASEAN SCIRD and COSTI for endorsement and approval.)
